Most people coast into December. Leaders finish.
Picture a hiker a few hundred yards from the summit. The legs burn, the trail is steep, and the parking lot is a long way back. This is where many people turn around, not because they can’t make it, but because they’ve stopped believing the last stretch matters. The view they came for is only at the top.
Q4 is that last stretch. The year’s momentum is fading, the calendar is filling with holidays, and it’s tempting to put everything on pause until January. The leaders who finish well are the ones who treat these final weeks as part of the climb, not the cooldown.
The Q4 Checklist
Seven things to do before the year closes.
1. Review honestly. Look at your goals from January. What did you hit, miss, or abandon? Don’t judge yourself. Just learn from it.
2. Finish what’s open. Pick the two or three projects that matter most and bring them home. Unfinished work drains energy you’ll need next year.
3. Check in with your people. Ask each team member, “What do you need from me to finish strong?” Then listen.
4. Say thank you, specifically. Name what someone did and the difference it made. Gratitude is a leadership practice, not a December formality.
5. Tend to your own health. Burnout doesn’t wait for January. Protect your sleep, your time with family, and your time with God.
6. Clear the clutter. Drop one commitment, meeting, or habit that no longer serves the mission. Say no now so you can say yes to what matters next.
7. Set your direction early. Pick one theme and three priorities for next year before the holidays. Walking into January with a plan is a head start.
Scripture and Reflection
“So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.” (Galatians 6:9, CSB)
The harvest comes to those who keep going. Take ten quiet minutes this week with these questions:
• What is the one thing I most want to finish before December 31?
• Who on my team needs to hear “thank you” from me this week?
• Where am I running on empty, and what would rest actually look like?
• What am I carrying that I should set down?
• If next year had one theme, what would it be?
Closing Thought
The year isn’t over, and neither is your influence. What you do in the next 60 days sets the tone for the next 365.
Grow today. Lead tomorrow.
