Are You Leading Where You Said You Were Going?

I went to a conference this week that people have been telling me for years I needed to attend.

So this year, I went.

There were several breakout sessions to choose from. Like everyone else, I looked through the titles, read the descriptions, and picked the ones that sounded like they would be most valuable to me.

And one thing surprised me.

Actually, it amazed me.

Not because of how good or bad the content was.

But because in a couple of the sessions, the content being delivered really didn’t match the title or the description of the class.

And it got me thinking about leadership.

A title creates an expectation.

A description communicates a destination.

When someone chooses to follow, attend, buy in, or participate, they’re doing so based partly on what we told them to expect.

So here’s the question:

Does what we are delivering match what we are communicating?

As leaders, are we saying one thing but doing another?

Are we creating programs, meetings, ministries, businesses, presentations, or initiatives that sound good on paper but don’t actually accomplish what we said they would?

As speakers, are we giving people what we promised to give them?

As organizations, does our mission statement match our actual priorities?

And as leaders, are we leading people toward the destination we told them we were headed toward—or somewhere completely different?

Because eventually people notice the disconnect.

You can have good content and still miss the objective.

You can have talented people and still lack direction.

You can be incredibly busy and still be moving toward the wrong destination.

Clarity tells people where we’re going.Alignment makes sure everything we do actually takes us there.

Before we ask whether something is good, maybe we need to ask:

Does it accomplish what we said it was supposed to accomplish?

Leadership isn’t just about communicating a vision.

It’s about making sure the experience matches the promise.

Grow Today. Lead Tomorrow.
